  • Amazon does a very good job of dominating the news cycle with features announced carefully for this purpose, sometimes more for the purpose of the PR than for the feature itself
  • Old media has basically been co-opted into being the investor PR department for big tech
  • Traditionally, companies would try to under promise and over deliver. Because of the current news cycle, the reverse is the case with big tech
  • The big four tech companies are getting to the point where they are starting to effectively replace religion in our lives
  • Big tech is bringing very complex moral questions with it
  • 80% of our phone time is spent in app, and 6 of the top 10 apps are owned by one company: Facebook
  • Most of the money spent on advertising is with big tech companies
  • As tech does better, it lowers prices, the reverse of the trend we see in traditional companies
  • People now look to Google for truth, rather than traditional sources
  • The question we have to wrestle with is: Is what is good for the consumer always good for society?
  • We’ve had job destruction in the past, we’ve just never had companies as good at it as big tech is today
  • Our evolutionary instinct is to want more, because lack causes starvation. But in the current first-world dynamic of plenty, this has some unintended consequences
  • Irrational urges on the part of the consumer can lead to massive margins
  • More households have a recurring revenue relationship with Amazon Prime than voted in the 2016 presidential election or have a landline
  • Brands may need to start to open stores to maintain their irrational margins
  • The more boring the industry, the higher the potential ROI

When you are starting to grow your social media following, you need to remember the impact that “social proof” will have on your results. Social proof means that people see that other people are interested in you, and it makes them more likely to check you out, and ultimately follow you on social media platforms.

This is why it is not of paramount importance, starting out, that you only target the customers that will be worth the most to you, but rather that you initially focus on the followers that will be less expensive to acquire, before reaching out to the followers that will be the more expensive to acquire, and potentially worth more to your business in the long run.

Points to Keep In Mind

  • Social media is responsible for the fastest growing business in history
  • You must master the game of social media if you want to be successful
  • Learn and understand how to use Facebook pages
  • You can use Facebook to get followers on all of the other platforms
  • Start with a global campaign, and boost certain content with very simple call to actions, telling people to like the page
  • Starting with a global campaign allows you to get the cost per action down to a low price point
  • High follower count is important because the more you have, the easier it is for you to get more, because of the social proof of your follower count
  • 10k followers on each of the main platforms is a minimum you should shoot for to start
  • A good format is, “If you like X, like my page.” Consider adding a photo of you with X
  • If you grow your Facebook page, it becomes much more easy to grow your other platforms, especially Instagram because the ad platform is the same
  • Instagram share for share:
    • First, share somebody else’s content
    • Let them know that you did
    • Then, you can come back later and ask for them to reshare something of yours
  • While Twitter is more difficult to make money from, it is still very valuable, and often undervalued today
  • On Twitter, you have to post more often. I recommend approximately 7 times per day, and you have to post natively to Twitter, not through other platforms like Instagram
  • While more people watched Instagram stories than Snapchat, Snapchat has better user engagement
  • When a platform is difficult to grow, it can be easier to compete, if you can crack the code
  • Again, with Snapchat, you can take your Facebook followers and redirect them to follow you on Snapchat
  • Use Facebook as the anchor to grow your other social media accounts
  • Use live for powerful, intense, urgent attention
  • Social media followers are not just for your ego, they are the new way to reach people
  • Email marketing is still extremely important
  • The game of business is to invest, and social media, when done right, can have a very high return on investment
  • Social media followers are very valuable in the long term because, after you have initially paid to gain them, you can then still get in front of them continually in the future
  • You do not need to do blackhat social media activity in order to grow. You can do it the real way!
  • You can gauge the quality of your life by your level of stress when you go to bed, and when you wake up
  • Profit in business comes from repeat customers, so do a good job for people and they will come back
  • Always start out by building a relationship, and then do bigger and bigger things

  • A lot of people have great ideas and concepts, but if you don’t know how to express it to others and persuade them, you will not be able to do much with your ideas
  • Even people who are natural at something follow certain rules and strategies, they just do it naturally. But anyone can learn them
  • Strategic preparation is essential to good sales
  • Your prospect needs to be 10 out of 10 on your product, trusting you, and your company, before closing
  • Rookie salespeople skip the qualifying section of the sales process. First of all, you need to make sure your prospect is in the market in the first place
  • By asking smart questions, you can get into solid rapport with prospects
  • Your prospect has to believe that you really care about them
  • Your prospect has to understand that, fundamentally, you’re just like them
  • Every idea has a certain amount of value to it. But the way it is presented either multiplies that value, or takes away from it
  • Persuasion is a learnable thing
  • Human communication is 45% tone of voice, 45% body language, and only 10% words

  • The first stage of confidence comes from acting as if
  • Study the best, in detail, to model it and eventually become it
  • Resilience has to do with the fundamental belief that you have what it takes to be successful
  • Once you learn how to communicate, it changes who you are, and you become the successful person you could be
  • Without fear, there is no courage
  • Objections are nothing more than smoke-screens for uncertainty

  • Scan at least 3 words at a time, to read faster with better comprehension
  • Use a pacer when reading, and set the pace for your eyes to follow
  • You will make more money if you know more languages
  • If you have children, one of the best gifts you can give them is an education in different languages while they’re young
  • Total immersion, without all of the rules, etc, is the best way to learn a language
  • To learn something, it has to feel important
  • See life as an adventure, rather than an accomplishment
  • Your goal is not always to be right, your goal is to figure out what is right no matter what it is
  • It’s exhausting to work on something that you’re not passionate about
  • A business partner is like a marriage, so you need to very carefully vet anyone you are considering bringing on as a partner
  • It’s better to be rich than to be right
  • Approach life with the idea that you can learn to do anything
  • Mentors are essential. Learn from them instead of trying to reinvent the wheel
  • Working hard is only 25% of the formula
  • Tools are essential to the process of making money online
  • Teaching people how to do things, and how to make money doing those things, is one of the easiest and fastest ways to start making money online
  • A lot of people take for granted what they do for their job, when there are actually more ways to make money with it than you may be thinking of
  • If there are no competitors for your business, it might be because there is no demand for it
  • A lot of times, it’s a good idea to choose a market where there are competitors, but you know what differentiates you

  • Today, it’s usually not a good use of your time to build your tools from the ground up, because usually there is something out there that already does it
  • Educational programs are one of the quickest, easiest ways to start making money online
  • Consider your profession when thinking about how to make money online: What is your profession, and can you create education around it?
  • No matter what you do, most people will not be your customer, and that is ok
  • Competitors prove that there is a market for what you’re doing
  • You have to learn to think deeper than the surface takeaway

What you believe about your own identity will drive your behavior. This is why, if you give yourself the identity of a learner, of the best and fastest learner in any room, and really convince yourself that that truly is your identity, your behavior will follow and you actually will become that learner.

This is an important truth: Identity drives behavior. So be purposeful about what you set as your identity! Our identities are not set in stone. Instead, they are defined by us. Too many people allow other people to define their identity, when it is yours to define!

  • Marketing has to vibe with what people already believe
  • Start in Marketing with people who already have a similar view to yours. Then, in the coming years, you can expand to evangelize from there
  • Throw out the idea that there are limits to what you can learn
  • Behavior is driven by identity, to make your identity never to back down from a problem
  • While the vast majority of knowledge is unknown to you at the moment, change your mindset to one that understand that almost any of it can be known and understood
  • Don’t invest time and energy into inventing the whole. Instead, have mentors!
